We haven't seen the Red Green OP01-002-trafalgar-law Leader in the meta for a while, especially with counter decks like Sakazuki dominated OP05 and OP06 metas. However, the Sakazuki ban gave OP01-002-trafalgar-law a chance at performing in the OP07 meta, and we witnessed it win first place in the Utrecht, Germany regional tournament.
The deck list I'll showcase in this guide is the one that won first place, defeating popular meta decks like Green Bonney, Yellow Enel, and Black Rob Lucci.
Gameplan
To activate OP01-002-trafalgar-law's effect you need to have 5 Characters on the field. For 2 Don, you can return any Character from the field to your hand and play a Character of a different color from the Character returned with a cost of 5 or less. So to consistently activate Leader effect, we need to build the OP01-002-trafalgar-law deck with low-cost cards that enable us to develop multiple Characters a turn.
For 2 Don, you can return any Character from the field to your hand and play a Character of a different color from the returned Character with a cost of 5 or less. To consistently activate this Leader effect, we need to build the deck with low-cost cards that enable us to develop multiple Characters each turn.
Red Green OP01-002-trafalgar-law is an aggressive deck aiming to play multiple Characters per turn and use the Leader effect to apply pressure on key turns. Cards like OP01-016-nami-333 and OP02-005-curlydadan are crucial for populating the field before returning a card and playing a 5-cost Character like OP01-047-trafalgar-law-753, EB01-012-cavendish, or ST01-012-monkeydluffy-938.
How to use Leader Effect?
Filling up the field with Characters is the first goal of activating Leader effect. Once that's established, we're aiming to continue that pressure game plan while gaining value with our return effect. Through Leader effect, we can return a red card with a draw effect and play a 5-cost Green card like OP01-047-trafalgar-law-753. This empowers your field and creates a threatening upcoming turn that your opponent will have to deal with. The only card we're usually looking to cheat out is ST01-012-monkeydluffy-938, so we'll have to return a Green card in its place.
When returning a card, we also want to return a low-cost card so we can replay it for more value or we can return a +2,000 Counter card.
Since EB01-012-cavendish is giving us 2 Active Don, we fill up our field, attack with EB01-012-cavendish and gain that 2 Don to activate Leader effect. We can also cheat out ST02-009-trafalgar-law to gain another attack on one of our attackers that's boosted by Don.
Searchers
Searchers ensure you can build a wide field without losing resources. We're not trying to use them aggressively, but more so to fill up the field and activate Leader effect. OP02-005-curlydadan is one of the best searchers, capable of drawing us a 1-cost Character, which we'll always be on the lookout for OP01-016-nami-333, creating a chain of search.
OP01-016-nami-333 draws a {Straw Hat Crew} Character, and the card we choose will depend on the state of our hand. So if we need a Rush attacker for OP01-047-trafalgar-law-753 to cheat out, then OP01-025-roronoa-zoro is the choice, ST01-012-monkeydluffy-938 if we need a finisher play, or we could pick one of our +2,000 Counter cards.
Lastly, ST02-007-jewelry-bonney draws a {Supernovas} type Character, which we'll primarily be looking for EB01-012-cavendish or OP01-047-trafalgar-law-753. ST02-009-trafalgar-law if we're trying to set up a finisher play.
Other Low-cost Cards
These cards enable that go wide on the field game plan, but also can find use in with their effects. ST01-007-nami can attach 1 of our rested Don to an attacker, making sure we don't lose on the aggression game plan and if she sticks on the field, we're gaining more value from her.
ST01-006-tony-tonychopper is a 1-cost blocker that protects your Leader or key Characters. You'll find him useful in matchups that stretch out and you need to protect your Leader for one more turn to set up the finisher attack.
Don Value
We want to play EB01-012-cavendish as early as possible to benefit from the 2 Don she provides. If she sticks on the field, we can set 2 Don as Active when she goes for the attack, so we want to use up Don before attacking with EB01-012-cavendish.
Using ST02-009-trafalgar-law, we can set EB01-012-cavendish as Active, gaining another 2 Don when she goes for the attack. This creates an extremely aggressive turn, especially if we're attaching Don to EB01-012-cavendish to boost her Power. Two powerful attacks that are difficult to Counter can put you on track to winning the turn.
ST02-009-trafalgar-law isn't only tied to EB01-012-cavendish, but can be played with OP01-047-trafalgar-law-753, OP01-025-roronoa-zoro, ST01-012-monkeydluffy-938. We're usually aiming to play ST02-009-trafalgar-law in the late game, where we're trying to put tons of pressure either to end the game or drop the opponent to 0 Life cards.
Strongest Turn
When playing OP01-047-trafalgar-law-753, we want to return a card that benefits us. This means cards with play effects like OP01-016-nami-333 or OP02-005-curlydadan are great choices since they're low-cost and offer a draw effect. OP01-025-roronoa-zoro is the best choice to cheat out through OP01-047-trafalgar-law-753, offering a Rush attacker that puts immediate pressure. However, we aren't bound to just play OP01-025-roronoa-zoro, we can still play OP02-005-curlydadan for the draw value if we don't have OP01-025-roronoa-zoro.
Developing two threats in one turn puts you ahead of the opponent and OP01-047-trafalgar-law-753 can be used to block and protect OP01-025-roronoa-zoro or your Leader if possible without sacrificing him.
+2,000 Counter
+2,000 Counter cards are great for protecting your Leader or key Characters, but each of these cards offers value when played. They're all low-cost, so they can be used to go wider on the field. ST01-011-brook is one of the best choices to play on an aggressive turn. He basically costs 0 Don with his On Play effect letting you attach two rested Don to one of your attackers, so we're usually playing him to get to 5 Characters on the field while maintaining an aggressive approach.
1-cost Characters OP02-015-makino and OP01-006-otama are easy to play for that wide field. OP02-015-makino can turn a 1-cost Character like OP01-016-nami-333 into an attacker, whereas OP01-006-otama reduces the Power of one of the opponent's Character making it easier for you to attack and KO.
Lastly, OP01-013-sanji is a 2-cost Character that can become a 7,000 Power attacker. He has to self-damage your Leader to pump up his power, which usually is a drawback, but in matchups where the opponent is avoiding attacking your Leader, this comes in handy to get more resources.
Heavy Hitter
The list runs only 1 copy of OP06-118-roronoa-zoro, mostly because he's too slow for what the deck is trying to do. However, in slow matchups like Yellow Enel or Green Bonney, OP06-118-roronoa-zoro can solo carry those games with his multiple attacks per turn.
Techs and Options
A 1-cost {Supernovas} blocker that acts similarly to ST01-006-tony-tonychopper.
Protects your 3-cost or less Character from getting KO'd by effects.
General Tips
- Our primary goal is to have 5 Characters on the field to activate Leader effect, this means we want to avoid attacking with our Characters mindlessly and we may even hold off on activating ST02-007-jewelry-bonney's effect.
- We're an aggressive deck trying to drop opponents low enough for our Rush attackers to close out the game. Prioritize attacking their Leader and forcing them to play their Counter cards.
- Your 1-cost Blockers play an important role in protecting your Leader or win conditions. However, we don't always want to use them immediately, we might hold off on blocking with them to ensure we have 5 Characters on the field.
- OP01-047-trafalgar-law-753 can return a OP01-025-roronoa-zoro to your hand and replay him to get more out of his Rush attack.
Mulligan Tips
OP01-016-nami-333 and OP02-005-curlydadan are important searchers to kick off your wide game plan.
EB01-012-cavendish and OP01-047-trafalgar-law-753 are cards we want to see as they'll put pressure in the mid-game.
Important Matchups
Black Rob Lucci
- You're playing against a deck that can remove your Characters easily using Rob Lucci.
- We're focusing attacking their Leader. The main goal is to drop them to 1 Life card so we'll ignore their field and focus on their Leader. This forces the opponent to play defensively rather than going full force on our Leader.
- OP05-091-rebecca and OP04-083-sabo can slow down our aggression. We can KO Rebecca with Nico Robin. ST01-012-monkeydluffy-938 can ignore their blockers, so he'd the perfect finisher play.
Green Bonney
- OP06-118-roronoa-zoro is an important card for this matchup since the opponent doesn't have an answer for it. We want to avoid attacking with him 3 times since we don't want 10c Doflamingo to keep OP06-118-roronoa-zoro rested.
- They have the blocker power to slow our aggression. We're trying to put enough pressure to win the game before the Fortress shuts us down completely. Nico Robin is an answer for OP05-030-donquixote-rosinante making it easier for you to KO OP01-051-eustasscaptainkid-701.
- It's important to put a lot of pressure on the opponent so they don't feel comfortable playing OP06-118-roronoa-zoro.
- OP06-035-hody-jones can rest your blockers, creating a chance for the opponent to strike your Leader.
Yellow Enel
- The Enel player will usually take the first two hits and from there we'll have to decide whether we want to continue our aggression or focus on developing a wide field. If they can't play OP04-112-yamato or OP07-119-portgasdace on the upcoming turn, we can attack with Leader and see if they fall to 1 Life card, if they do, we can go full aggro mode on them, trying to drop them to 0 Life cards. This forces Counter cards and can set up an upcoming aggressive turn.
- Avoid playing OP01-025-roronoa-zoro in the early game if you expect a OP05-102-gedatsu.
- ST02-009-trafalgar-law is a premium card in this matchup, creating two powerful attacks to close out the game.
Closing Words
Red Green Law won a regionals tournament, proving that off-meta decks can still perform in the competitive scene and even win a regionals. The deck has an aggressive game plan, but each game feels different, as you'll be relying on multiple win conditions to set up the finisher play.
