Purple Yellow OP09-062-nico-robin is an OP09 Leader that uses Trigger effects as part of its game plan. Having her in the Yellow color gives us access to powerful cards with Trigger effects that strengthen our deck.
Since OP09-062-nico-robin has a built-in ramp effect, this deck is usually built with many late-game Characters since you get to play them on earlier turns, putting win conditions on the field that force opponents to find answers for them. Yellow and Purple colors have many late-game carries to consider adding to the list, especially those that give you extra Life cards to prolong the game until you can set up the finishing blow.
Gameplan
OP09-062-nico-robin is a ramp Leader, giving you a rested Don when she attacks. For you to gain that rested Don, you have to trash a card with a Trigger effect from your hand. This means we have to add as many cards with Trigger effects to consistently ramp in the early game. We'll usually ramp twice in one game, so it will cut down on our resources, but it's worth it since we're playing higher-cost Characters.
Since you have to attack with OP09-062-nico-robin to gain the rested Don, you'll start activating it by turn 2, allowing you to play a higher-cost Character on turn 3.
On top of that, OP09-062-nico-robin has the Banish keyword, meaning if we damage the opponent's Leader, their Life card will go to the Trash instead of their hand. We want to take advantage of that whenever possible, focusing OP09-062-nico-robin 's attack on their Leader, which in turn will force them to Counter OP09-062-nico-robin's attack when they can.
Early Character
OP06-104-kikunojo is best played on turn 2 if you're going second, giving you a 6,000-power attacker to put some pressure on the opponent. If KO'd when your opponent is at 3 Life cards or less, you gain a Life card. This can deter opponents from even trying to KO her, avoiding giving you the extra Life card, which makes it harder for them to win the game.
OP06-104-kikunojo also has a Trigger effect, so she's an option to trash through Leader effect or if we manage to activate her Trigger effect, we can play her on the field for free.
Blockers
ST07-007-charlotte-brulee and OP09-109-jaguardsaul are low-cost blockers that will be important to protecting your Leader in the later stages of the game. OP09-109-jaguardsaul has 5,000 Power, capable of going on the offense when needed.
ST07-007-charlotte-brulee and OP09-109-jaguardsaul both have trigger effects, so they synergize with your Leader's strategy. Their Trigger effects let you play them on the field, perfect to add a blocker for free to protect your Leader from attackers and potentially stop your opponent from winning the game.
Burn Life Cards
OP09-107-nico-robin is an insanely strong play on turn 3, and with your Leader's ramp effect, you can play her on turn 3 even if you're going first. If your opponent is at 3 Life cards or more, OP09-062-nico-robin trashes one of their Life cards, dropping them down on resources and making it easier for you to win the game.
Mid-game Control Options
OP08-106-nami is more suited for field control, KOing one of the opponent's Characters with a cost of 5 or less. You have to trash a card with a Trigger effect from your hand to activate OP08-106-nami's KO. This shouldn't be too difficult since your deck is full of cards with Triggers.
You usually want to play OP08-106-nami when you have 5 cards or less in your hand. OP08-106-nami draws you a card when activating her effect only if you have 3 cards or less. Playing OP08-106-nami drops your hand to 4 cards and trashing a card will drop you to 3 cards, fulfilling her draw condition.
Her Trigger effect can catch opponents off guard, KOing one of their attackers, which can ruin their attack turn and even shut them down from winning the game.
OP09-065-sanji has to return 1 Don to activate his effect, letting you rest one of the opponent's Characters with a cost of 6 or less and gaining the Rush keyword. We can then attack the Character we rested, threatening to KO it.
Since we're returning a Don through OP09-065-sanji's effect, it's important to keep the upcoming turn in mind. If we're at 7 Don when we play OP09-065-sanji, we'll be at 8 Don on the upcoming turn. This means we have to ramp up with our Leader effect to be able to play one of our late-game 9-cost Characters.
Late Game Characters
OP09-119-monkeydluffy is a great play if the opponent has a rested Character on the field we want to KO or at least keep pressuring their Leader with aggressive attacks. OP09-119-monkeydluffy's 10,000 Power isn't easy for most opponents to deal with, combined with the Rush keyword, you can put his Power to use on the turn he's played. Moreover, OP09-119-monkeydluffy draws us a card, adding more resources to our hand.
Extra Life Cards
When it comes to extra Life cards, this list has two options to play, OP04-112-yamato and OP07-119-portgasdace. Both options require you to be at 1 or less Life cards for them to fully activate their effects.
OP04-112-yamato can KO one of the opponent's Characters with a cost equal to or less than the total of your and your opponent's Life cards. Then OP04-112-yamato gives you a Life card only if you have 1 or less Life cards. So we are gaining an extra Life card, which forces opponent to attack more, and we're potentially KOing one of their attackers.
As for OP07-119-portgasdace, he'll always give us a Life card, but he'll then check how many Life cards you have. If you have more than 2 Life cards, OP07-119-portgasdace won't gain the Rush keyword. This can be fine, but in many cases, you'll value that Rush keyword, especially if you want to KO a rested Character or put pressure on the opponent's Leader.
Sometimes, you'll opt not to gain the extra Life card if you're already at 2 Life cards to get the Rush keyword on OP07-119-portgasdace.
Events
OP09-117-dereshi is great for extra draws, it looks at the top 5 cards in your deck and lets you add 2 Trigger cards to your hand. However, being a 3 Don Event means you might not have the chance to play it on certain turns, instead, you'll trash it to activate your Leader or OP08-106-nami's effects.
OP06-115-youre-the-one-who-should-disappear is great for the +3,000 Power boot you gain to protect your Leader or a valuable Character. If it's the last card in your Life area, the extra Life card you through its trigger effect can be a lifesaver.
+2,000 Counters
The list has multiple Characters for their +2,000 Counter effects, but they can still find use in specific scenarios of the game.
If you're in the late-game and trying to win, OP09-106-nico-olvia is great for her On Play effect, giving your Leader +3,000 Power to go for a heavier attack.
OP04-100-caponegangbege's trigger effect is perfect when used defensively, shutting down one of the opponent's Characters and saving you from playing multiple Counter cards. As for OP07-107-franky trigger, it's best activated when you're at 1 Life card, drawing you a card and developing OP07-107-franky on the field. However, there are situations where you'll value the +2,000 Counter more than the Trigger.
Techs and Options
OP08-069-charlotte-linlin is perfect to remove a 6-cost or less Character and gain a Life card. You are giving your opponent a Life card, but it's worth it since you're weakening their field presence.
OP08-119-kaido-linlin is a late-game win condition if it manages to attack. Destroying the opponent's field, giving you a Life card, and trashing an opponent's Life card will put you insanely ahead of the opponent that they can't catch up.
General Tips
- Use Leader effect early into the game to set up for your future turns. You want to play your higher-cost Characters as early as possible, so by turn 2, you should start activating your Leader effect.
- Since you plan to play late-game Characters that give Life cards, you're generally fine dropping to 1 Life card.
- Whenever possible, attack the opponent's Leader with OP09-062-nico-robin to make use of the Banish keyword. You can attach Don to your Leader to force opponents to burn more Counter resources. This can be extremely annoying for opponents when they're at risk of losing the game and they need all the Counter resources they can get to halt your attacks.
Mulligan Tips
- OP06-104-kikunojo is always a great play on Don 4, giving you a reliable Character to put pressure on the opponent.
- OP09-107-nico-robin or OP09-065-sanji for a strong mid-game. OP09-107-nico-robin is great if you're going first, whereas OP09-065-sanji is best if you're going second.
Important Matchups
Blue Doflamingo
- They will play aggressively against us, try to push as much damage as possible and run us out of counter resources. We're trying to gain control of the field, and the late game should be ours to win.
- ST17-002-trafalgar-law is annoying in the early game since he can return OP06-104-kikunojo or OP09-109-jaguardsaul to our hand.
- Our main focus is to KO their Characters, so attacks should go on rested Characters. Your opponent will go above and beyond to protect a Character when possible. OP09-065-sanji and OP08-106-nami are great for mid-game control, helping you slow your opponent down.
- You will need the extra Life cards from OP04-112-yamato and OP07-119-portgasdace and they'll help you to control the field. Since your main focus will be on controlling the field, OP04-112-yamato should be able to KO a 4-cost Character.
Red Shanks
- Red Shanks is a control deck that can slow you down from winning the game. The Leader's effect reduces the Power of one of your attackers by -1,000, which means we will have a tougher time threatening them with OP09-062-nico-robin's Banish attack.
- Since we're ramping up and playing high-cost Characters on earlier turns, they'll struggle to KO our Characters and will need to combo with their Power reducers. Anything with 7,000 Power or more will require them to commit a Power reducer, this means OP09-065-sanji is a great mid-game play since you're forcing them to have the Power reducer.
- 10,000 Power Characters are your best option since it forced your opponent to have 2 Power reduction cards to KO them with Character effects. So when choosing between your late-game OP09-119-monkeydluffy and OP07-119-portgasdace are better than OP04-112-yamato.
- OP09-004-shanks will slow us down, and we can't afford to attack and try to KO it. If possible, shift all your focus on attacking the opponent's Leader and try to rush down the opponent.
Black Marshall D.Teach
- OP09-081-marshalldteach trashes a card to shut off your On Play effects, but it can be tough for them to keep activating it against our deck. Since we're ramping, we will force them to activate Leader effect on an earlier turn, which bleeds them from resources. Additionally, OP09-062-nico-robin will trash valuable resources or force them to use Counter cards, this will make it tougher for them to continue activating Leader effect in the late game.
- Important we KO EB01-048-laboon and OP09-083-van-augur to remove their cost-reduction effects from play. You could use OP09-065-sanji and OP08-106-nami to KO them, but your opponent might shut your On Play effects.
- It can be tough for them to KO your 9-cost and 10-cost Characters, forcing them to play 2-cost reducers to put them in range for their KO events.
Closing Words
The Purple Yellow OP09-062-nico-robin deck ramps up early in the game to play high-cost Characters on earlier turns. This means opponents will have less Don to deal with those Characters, making them a bigger threat. Gaining Life cards helps you prolong the game and gives you extra resources, putting you ahead as the game stretches on.
