Heya everyone! Yellow players, gather up, we have a new Yellow Leader joining the One Piece Card Game! OP10-099-eustasscaptainkid is our newest Yellow Leader, standing firm next to top Yellow Leaders OP05-098-enel, OP03-099-charlotte-katakuri, and OP08-098-kalgara.
OP10-099-eustasscaptainkid's effect synergizes with {Supernovas} type Characters, so naturally, the list will be full with {Supernovas} Characters to get the most out of our Leader's defensive effect.
In this guide, I'll explain how Yellow OP10-099-eustasscaptainkid's effect works, the general strategy of the deck, and how to approach different matchups. Let's get started!
Gameplan
OP10-099-eustasscaptainkid's effect activates at the end of your turn, flipping the top Life card face-up to restand one of your {Supernovas} type Characters with a cost of 3 to 8 as active. That Character will also gain the Blocker keyword, turning it into a defensive Character to block an opponent's attack.
We have multiple high-power {Supernovas} type Characters in this list, which we're able to attack with them aggressively and then restand them using OP10-099-eustasscaptainkid's effect. They'll act as blockers to protect our Leader or a rested Character, saving us from playing Counter cards.
This Yellow deck has two main game plans, trashing opponent's Life cards and creating defensive turns with your Leader's effect. Using OP10-109-basil-hawkins, OP09-107-nico-robin, and OP10-112-eustasscaptainkid, we can trash opponent's Life cards, dropping them low on Life cards and trashing valuable card resources. High Power Supernovas Characters along with your Leader's effect will be your wall, protecting you from an attacker and pushing the game to the late stages where you can go for a winning line.
Early Turns
OP10-111-monkeydluffy's On Play effects looks at the top 5 cards in your deck and lets you reveal 1 {Supernovas} type card other than [Monkey.D.Luffy] and add it to your hand. Ideally, you'll play OP10-111-monkeydluffy in the early turns to find the Character you're missing from your hand.
OP10-108-scratchmen-apoo and EB01-057-shirahoshi are low-cost blockers which will be troublesome for your opponents, preventing them from creating a winning turn. OP10-108-scratchmen-apoo only gains the Blocker keyword if you have a {Supernovas} type Character in play other than Scratchmen Apoo, which shouldn't be a tough condition to meet.
As for EB01-057-shirahoshi she's a 2-cost Blocker that your opponent doesn't want to KO with an effect. If she is KO'd by an effect, you can add a Life card, making it tougher for the opponent to win the game and giving you more card resources. So usually, they'll avoid KOing her through an effect and rely on other means to remove it or simply force you to block with her.
Trash Life Cards
OP10-109-basil-hawkins and OP09-107-nico-robin can both trash the top card in your opponent's Life Area. However, each one of these Characters operates differently.
When KO'd, OP10-109-basil-hawkins trashes the top card in your opponent's Life Area. So we're often not too upset if the opponent attacks OP10-109-basil-hawkins, but in some cases, they might avoid attacking OP10-109-basil-hawkins. Luckily, since OP10-109-basil-hawkins is a {Supernovas} type Character, we can attack with him and activate Leader effect to restand him and give him the blocker keyword, forcing the opponent to KO him.
As for OP09-107-nico-robin, if the opponent has 3 or more Life cards, she'll trash the top Life card. You're putting them lower on Life cards, while setting up a 6,000 Power attacker for the later turns.
OP09-107-nico-robin's trigger effect lets you play a 3-cost or less Character from your hand, so your best choices will be OP10-108-scratchmen-apoo or EB01-057-shirahoshi for the blocker keyword if your opponent has a high power attack to win the game.
KO Control
OP08-106-nami is the control option, by trashing a card with a trigger effect from your hand, you can KO a 5-cost or less Character. If you have 3 or cards less left in your hand, you can draw a card. So you won't be losing on resources when playing OP08-106-nami, helping you shift the game in your favor.
OP08-106-nami's trigger effect KO's a 5-cost Character, which can shut down the opponent's aggressive turn, removing one of their attackers to weaken their aggression.
Supernovas
Vanilla characters aren't usually the best in the game; they're big bodies but have no effects, so we rarely see them added to decks for that reason. However, OP10-105-cavendish being a {Supernovas} type Character works in this strategy, as we can use its high power both offensively and defensively with our Leader's effect.
OP10-119-trafalgar-law lets you place a {Supernovas} type card in your hand at the top of your Life card, face down. This adds more survivability for us and allows us to activate the Leader effect an extra time. OP10-119-trafalgar-law is a 7-cost, 9,000 Power Character that will offer both offensive and defensive pressure.
As for OP10-112-eustasscaptainkid, he continues OP10-109-basil-hawkins and OP09-107-nico-robin mid-game job, trashing the opponent's top Life card, to lower their resources and make them more vulnerable to your attacks.
At the end of your turn, OP10-112-eustasscaptainkid draws a card and trashes a card from your hand, helping you find better cards. We often need it to find Counter cards to protect ourselves, but we can also search for late-game plays to continue developing win conditions.
Rush + Life Gain
OP07-119-portgasdace is the late-game Rush attacker, best played when you're at 1 or less Life cards. You gain a Life card by playing OP07-119-portgasdace, which enables you to activate your Leaders effect. OP07-119-portgasdace can then attack, either targeting a rested Character or the opponent's Leader.
Techs and Options
A strong consideration to add, allowing you to KO a Character with a cost equal to or less than the opponent's Life cards. OP05-102-gedatsu is best played on Don 5 to KO a 4-cost Character, putting your opponent behind on the field.
OP10-101-urouge is a {Supernovas} type Character that synergizes with your Leader's effect, allowing you to attack with him and still have him to block an attack.
A low-cost Blocker to protect you from an attack. EB01-052-viola can turn the top Life card face down, allowing you to activate your Leader effect for a stronger defensive turn.
OP05-114-el-thor is a Counter event to protect you from an opponent's attack.
OP07-116-blaze-slice can be used during your or your opponent's turn, letting you rest an opponent's 4-cost Character and gaining +1,000 Power on your Leader or Character. You can rest a potential attack to weaken the opponent's attack turn or rest a blocker to go for an aggressive turn.
General Tips
- Be mindful of your Life cards. Activating your Leader effect to set your Supernovas Character as Active and give it the Blocker keyword, requires you to have a face-down Life card at the top. So losing face-down Life cards to your opponent can prevent you from activating your Leader's effect as much.
- We're not trying to aggro our opponent's Leader, but more so control their side of the field and leave OP10-112-eustasscaptainkid, OP10-109-basil-hawkins, and OP09-107-nico-robin to trash their Life cards, eventually putting them in a vulnerable spot.
- Eventually, we'll focus our attacks on their low Life card Leader, forcing them to use their Counter resources. We'll have our Supernovas Character as a blocker, so in most cases, we won't be too worried about being rushed down.
Mulligan Tips
- OP10-111-monkeydluffy, OP10-109-basil-hawkins, and OP09-107-nico-robin are the usual cards we want to have for the early game.
- OP10-105-cavendish isn't a bad keep if you're going second.
Important Matchups
Green Bonney
- We're against a Stall Leader, capable of resting one of our attackers to slow down the pace of the game. It's important we attack with our highest Power attacker first so they don't rest it with OP07-019-jewelry-bonney's effect.
- We can't afford to leave EB01-012-cavendish in play for too long, so if he's rested, our attacks will focus on removing him from play.
- Although we can trash the opponent's Life card and eventually set up a winning attack, it will be challenging to get our attacks through once they play their Fortress strategy. They also can KO a rested Character with ST16-004-shanks, lowering our offensive pressure.
Black Marshall D. Teach
- OP09-081-marshalldteach will be a nightmare, shutting down your OP09-107-nico-robin, OP10-119-trafalgar-law, and OP10-112-eustasscaptainkid On Play effect. You won't be able to trash your opponent's Life cards, and will need to attack into their Leader to win the game.
- Other than attacking into their Characters, you can't remove OP09-086-jesus-burgess if it gains a lot of Power in the late game. So if possible, attack it early in the game before it gains too much Power.
- Even though we can't activate out Characters' On Play effect, we'll still play them on the field to have attackers in play.
- OP09-093-marshalldteach will slow us down, and it will be tough to break through, especially if they have two of them in play.
Red Shanks
- Against OP09-001-shanks, trashing their Life cards is a priority, dropping them low enough for your attackers later on to pose a threat and at the same time, we're lowering their resources.
- OP09-001-shanks can reduce the Power of one of your attackers by 1,000, making it easier for them to defend against an attack.
- Their list has multiple control Characters to KO a Character on your field. They can KO 6,000 Power Characters easily, but will need Power reduction cards to deal with OP10-105-cavendish, OP10-119-trafalgar-law, and OP10-112-eustasscaptainkid.
- We can't remove their high-cost Characters like OP09-004-shanks. We'll focus our attacks on their Leader, trying to rush them down, especially since they'll be low on Life cards thanks to our trash effects.
Purple Monkey D.Luffy
- OP05-060-monkeydluffy will add 1 Life card to their hand to ramp 1 Don, allowing them to make bigger plays a turn earlier. They often will activate their Leader effect twice in one game, so they'll be at 3 Life cards.
- When possible, we need to KO Characters like ST18-003-san-gorou and OP05-074-eustasscaptainkid. They offer value every turn for the opponent and we can't ignore them.
- As for higher power Characters, we will have to go for an aggressive strategy, focusing down their Leader over trying to KO OP09-119-monkeydluffy or OP08-069-charlotte-linlin.
Red Green Smoker
- The extra Don and Banish attacks from OP10-030-smoker will be problematic, so we'll try to KO it when possible.
- Using our Life card trash, we can quickly put OP10-001-smoker low on Life cards, forcing them to rely on the Fortress game plan to stay in the game.
- We can't allow their attackers to easily KO our Characters. It's important to keep high Power attackers in play since we'll have to attack their OP01-051-eustasscaptainkid-701 and eventually break through the fortress.
Closing Words
OP10-099-eustasscaptainkid is one of the strongest Yellow Leader in OP10 meta, using Supernova Characters to their full potential. The ability to attack with those Characters and still have them ready to block an attack can prolong games, giving you additional turns to attack more and create an opportunity to win.
