The Spirit of the Race: Horse-Inspired Characters in One Piece

Among all the anime series you’ve seen so far, I think we can all agree that One Piece has some of the most creative characters. The selection is limitless. Eiichiro Oda’s world is a circus of pirates, samurai, clowns, cyborgs, and yes, even horses.

There are plenty of horse-inspired characters that take on certain features from horses, but it’s important to mention that there are also plenty of horses. Oda has a knack for drawing inspiration from everything under the sun. Mythology, history, pop culture, real-world animals, you name it.

So, it’s no surprise that we can also find equine traits that slipped into One Piece in some sensible, quirky, creative, and sometimes, hilarious ways. But don’t expect majestic stallions. This is One Piece, after all, where horses can be a toy soldier, a clown, a crime boss’s minion, or even a genetically modified fighter.

Let’s highlight some of the best horse-inspired characters in One Piece.

Stronger

First, we have Stronger, which is one of the most interesting characters in the series. Why? Well, first of all, this is a horse where the name doesn’t match what you are seeing. When you see the name “Stronger,” you’re probably imagining a big, tall, maybe black horse that has muscles everywhere you look.

Well, in One Piece, you get exactly the opposite of what you’ve hoped for. Stronger is a pale-blue horse often seen carrying Doc Q, and the horse is always with its tongue out, feeling exhausted. We all know that horses are always given unique names, especially in horse racing, but this time it is exactly the opposite. When you see “Stronger,” you see a horse that it’s impossible to make into the 2025 Breeders’ Cup winners, even in a fiction like One Piece.

To be honest, Blackbeard’s weight is no joke; maybe that’s why the horse is always tired. The horse has one of the weakest constitutions I’ve seen from a horse, but at least he is loyal.

But keeping his tongue out isn’t his only “superpower.” Stronger consumed the Uma Uma no Mi, Model: Pegasus, which is a Mythical Zoan Devil Fruit that transforms him into a winged Pegasus or a hybrid form.

Finally, Stronger can be useful again, as he is now able to fly around.

Farul

Then we have Farul, which is another horse that’s worth mentioning, especially since he’s tied to one of the most emotional arcs of the series: the Dressrose storyline. This is Rebecca’s steed, and a gladiator forced to fight in Doflamingo’s coliseum.

But what makes this horse so special? Well, it isn’t his strength or power, but his connection with Rebecca. Despite living in a brutal environment where most fighters rely on brute force, Rebecca chooses to fight with her horse, defending rather than killing.

SPOILER ALERT: Fraud ends up injured while protecting Rebecca, and this is a heartbreaking reminder that in Oda’s world, animals aren’t invincible.

Speed

If you’re looking for the weirdest horse inspired One Piece character, look no further than Speed. She’s one of Kaido’s Headliners in Wano, a result of the SMILE artificial Devil Fruits. Her hybrid form gives her the body of a woman with the features of a horse, and let’s just say Oda had some fun with this design.

Speed is literally fast; her name says it all, but she’s also one of the more bizarre examples of how far One Piece will go with animal-human hybrids. What makes her memorable is not just her look, but her role in helping Tama during the Wano arc.

Despite starting as an enemy, Speed develops a soft spot for Tama, showing once again that even horse-inspired characters can become allies.

Shelly: A Gentle “Hoooorse” of Long Ring Long Land

Shelly is… well, let’s describe her the way Tonjit does: a “hooooorse.” On Long Ring Long Land, the island where everything stretches, Shelly is a white horse with absurdly long legs and neck. Chopper mistook her for a giraffe on sight. It looks more like a giraffe than a horse, to be honest.

Despite her odd proportions, she’s tender and patient, waiting a full decade for her master Tonjit to return. Shelly’s capacity for loyalty and gentleness shines through her surreal appearance, a quietly emotional moment in a world wild with action.

Horseman

Then there’s the truly unsettling Horseman, a Gifter in the Beasts Pirates who consumed a Horse SMILE. This artificial Zoan Devil Fruit turned him into a bizarre horse-person hybrid, complete with a horse head and human torso. In classic Wano style, it's equal parts surreal and creepy.

A Skeletal Horse Yokai from the Celestial Dragons?

One of the lesser-known characters that doesn’t get the attention it needs involves Saint Ethanbaron, one of the Five Elders of the World Government. He has the ability to partially transform into a Bokotsu, which is a mythical flaming skeletal horse yokai from Japanese legend.

This is one of the scariest-looking horse-inspired characters in One Piece.

So, when you think of One Piece, horses are probably not the first thing that comes to mind. But if you look closer, there are tons of horses in the series. Which one is your favorite? Tells us in the comments.
